Simplifying Laptop Selection for Amateur Tech Users: A User-Centered Approach.
Project Overview
Choosing the right laptop can be a daunting task for amateur tech users due to the overwhelming number of options and technical specifications.
This project aims to bridge the gap between users' needs and their understanding of laptop specifications, by developing a user-friendly solution that simplifies the laptop selection process.
The goal is to help amateur tech users find laptops that best suit their needs and budget, making it easier for them to make informed decisions.

Research Methods
To understand the decision-making process of our tech-naive users, we employed a comprehensive research approach.
By combining these research methods, we were able to map out the journey of amateur tech users. This comprehensive approach allowed us to triangulate key findings and develop actionable recommendations to enhance the laptop selection process for our users.
Heuristic Evaluation
We began with Heuristic Evaluations on NewEgg to assess the usability of current laptop-finding tools. This helped us identify areas for improvement in the user interface and overall experience.

Interview
Next, we conducted interviews with 12 participants, delving into their personal preferences, experiences, and challenges. These interviews provided valuable insights into the specific needs of our target audience.
Participants and Interview Questions
Survey
To complement our qualitative data, we distributed a survey to capture statistical data and broaden our understanding of user needs and preferences on a larger scale.
We received 34 valid responses, which helped us focus on decoding the links between user requirements, budget constraints, and computer specifications. This quantitative data provided valuable insights that informed our research and recommendations.
Key Findings
🔖 Finding 1: Knowledge Gap
Users frequently experience a disconnect between their abstract needs and the specific technical requirements of laptops.
The evaluation identified issues like the use of technical jargon for display types (e.g., "WQXGA+", "UHD") that can be confusing for users (Severity Rating: 0) (Heuristic Evaluation).
11 out of 12 amateur tech users rely on recommendations and value simplicity over technical knowledge. One participant stated, "I didn’t learn anything because I don’t understand the specs" (Interviews).
38.2% of respondents are familiar with their laptop's hardware specs, while 58.8% are not, indicating a gap in understanding (Survey).
🔖 Finding 2: Reliance on Recommendations
Due to the complexity of technical jargon, users often rely on recommendations and simplified information.
Several participants mentioned relying on recommendations. For instance, one said, "Recommended by my classmates/cohorts... The suggestions from my friend helped me a lot" (Interviews).
20.6% of survey respondents learned about their laptop model through recommendations from friends or relatives (Survey).
🔖 Finding 3: Information Overload
An abundance of information and a lack of guidance contribute to decision fatigue among users.
The evaluation pointed out that the website has too many words and pictures, leading to information overload (Severity Rating: 1) (Heuristic Evaluation).
6 out of 12 amateur users find the laptop selection process overwhelming due to the vast amount of technical information available. One participant mentioned, "Because my expectations are relatively low, I didn’t read too much about specs" (Interviews).
The need for simplified resources is highlighted by the survey results, with respondents indicating the importance of clear explanations of technical specifications (Survey).
Recommendations
In light of the 3 critical findings from our user experience research, our recommendations within the "LaptopEase" project portfolio aim to directly address these challenges.#EBF5FF

Takeaways
Triangulating UX Research Methods
Reflecting on the "LaptopEase" project, I've realized the paramount importance of triangulating user experience research methods. By combining heuristic evaluations, interviews, and surveys, we gained a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of our users' needs and challenges. This project underscored that relying on a single method can lead to a skewed perspective, whereas employing multiple methods ensures a more robust and holistic view. The experience has deepened my appreciation for method triangulation and its crucial role in developing user-centered designs that genuinely address user needs.
